Backup and Updates
Backup and restore
Use Settings > Advanced for the main maintenance actions:
Backup nowRestore from file
Pastiera creates and imports ZIP backups. The backup system is intended to keep your setup portable across reinstalls or device moves.
What is included
Current backup coverage includes the most important user-facing customization data, such as:
- preferences
- layouts
- variations
- SYM mappings
- dictionaries and related custom data
The restore flow is designed to preserve compatibility with newer defaults where possible, instead of blindly replacing everything.
When to back up
Create a backup before:
- trying nightly builds
- resetting the app
- changing devices
- importing large custom layout or dictionary changes
App updates
Some Pastiera builds can check GitHub for updates from the settings screen. This depends on the release channel and build flavor.
For normal users, the main point is simple:
- stable builds are for predictable use
- nightly builds are for newer changes and quicker verification
Public nightly source
If you want the public nightly package source directly, use:
Current limitations
Update behavior is not identical across all channels:
- some builds use GitHub update checks
- F-Droid-oriented builds may intentionally handle updates differently
- nightly and stable can have different application IDs or signing expectations, depending on channel
Those operational details are covered in the developer section, not in the main user flow.
Recommended habit
If your setup matters and you customize Pastiera heavily:
- make a backup before testing a new channel
- keep one known-good ZIP backup
- verify your layouts, SYM pages, and dictionaries immediately after restore
